New cashier here!

Hey guys! I just got hired at Walmart (well pending the drug screen but I don't do drugs so I know I will pass that). I'm just curious as to what orientation is like, training (do you get paid time and a half? I did at Meijers...), how long training is, what it's like on the 5-12am shift since that is what I'm going to be working.

And if you're part time how many hours usually would I get? I said no less than 20 and she wrote no more than 33.

Just curious as to what should I expect. And I know this might sound like a dumb question, so forgive me, but I notice everyone wears the blue shirts and khakis. I get issued those shirts right? God that sounded dumb. LOL How long do they train you on the cash register? I've never done one before but I catch on to things really fast.

TIA!!!

Thanks! Me too. I'm so glad my hours won't interfere with GH during the day. Only GH Night Shift. LOL

lol, God no. Wal-Mart will pay you as little as they possibly can. Always, lol.

Orientation will be boring. At least you'll be paid for it.

Lame videos from the 90's and computer tests.

It's mind numbing.

You can buy them from Wal-Mart. The shirts. But no you get nothing issued. Again, Wal-Mart isn't going to pay for anything more than they absolutely have to. You'll have to use your piddly ten percent off to stock up on pants and shirts of your own.

How rude. LOL
Meijers issued us the shirts and we have to turn them in when we stopped working there.

They want my orientation to be next Friday but I take my son to get his casts off that day like a 45 minute drive from my house so I can't do it that day. :( The lady seemed surprised. Figures they'd pick the one day of the week I can't do it!

They wanted me to start mine the day I had to go to Indianapolis to pick up my Grandmother. So, I had to wait a week. Which was good in my opinion.

I did all the CBL's in one afternoon, watched all the silly videos the next afternoon and then was sent to slave labor, I mean uhh my job back in the Deli on my third day.

Been there for three months.

Waiiit, how many CBLs did you have? Cause maybe it's different here, but we get kicked off after 90 minutes.

You can buy blue shirts online on the Wal-Mart Wire for really cheap. $3.00 to be exact. And for an additional $2.19, you can have white "Wal-Mart" lettering embroidered on them. (Yes, I am full of useless information, lol.)

You'll learn more about what you can do on the Wire during orientation. Learn the Wire and make it your best friend. It lets you do everything from ordering blue shirts/khaki pants to researching various company policies to setting up direct deposit for you paycheck and everywhere in between.

My wal-mart gave me some polo shirts that are more like gray and ugly but I use them if I have nothing else clean... and I got 15 dollars award for pants to buy .... you had to fill out a slip or something to get that stuff though I remember doing that... They took out a "prize value" on my check for the shirts the amount was 15.61 they paid me extra but then deducted it because I picked up the shirts but the "Award" on your paycheck is for the pants. As for the 5-12am shift.... they are kindof screwing you there because they don't have to pay you the night differential atleast that's what some have said...

Well, the way our Wal-Mart worked. You had to be there X amount of months to be eligible for the free crappy shirt and the credit towards pants.

It was only for that month too, lol.

YAY. I love Wal-Mart!

hi! I'm a newly hired cashier also. Theres a drug test? Wow, didn't know that. That would have been weird. Maybe they don't do that in Canada? Who knows! Also, at the second closest walmart to my house (25 minutes away), they still wear those cool vests...i went there a week ago...and the person who gave me my first interview also wore a cool vest, along with many people at the hiring centre. I'm supposed to have oreintation tommorow...but i don't know if it's too soon since the store i got hired for is new, so it only opens in November, which is when i start.

I'm in canada too.
We get vests or smocks.
And.......
No drug testing unless its for a goverment position I belive.
I don't see why you should have to do a drug test just for a low-level job.
Oh, I'm a cashier too.
One year~!

Cool vests?

You mean those hideous blue things that say "How may I help you?"

Ewww! The only good things about those are that they have pockets to store all of your miscellaneous crap in.

The dress code hasn't changed in Canada yet, and no drug tests.

September 8 2007, 02:46:35 UTC 5 years ago

wait.
You had to take a drug test?
Really?
What if you said no?

dreamsgoneawry

September 8 2007, 02:48:44 UTC 5 years ago

That's not a common thing???
I bet I wouldn't get hired if I said no. I don't do drugs so I know I'm good. LOL

I'm in Canada.
I'm pretty sure its against our rights.
Which is good beucase my employer doesnt need to know
what I've been doing.
I mean, as a cashier, I just dont think it matters.
Thats sucks.

Companies have a legal right to protect their assets. In other words, they know that certain people, given the opportunity, will steal cash from their employers in order to pay for their "fix." I've worked in loss prevention before and believe me when I say that it happens a lot more than you might think. That being said, I think it's totally reasonable to request that prospective employees take a drug test.

Maybe it's just me, but I would not hire someone who failed one. Even if their integrity wasn't questionable (meaning I didn't think they'd steal to support their habit), I wouldn't want to pay someone who comes into work stoned out of their mind and unable to do what they were hired for.

The one thing I don't agree with for the drug tests though, is that apparently even if you take Tylenol One (codeine), or if you have a prescription for Vicodin or something (or you're on methadone) you'll fail. And then from what I know, typically won't get the job.

No time and a half, but you do get $1 more per hour on Sundays that you work. I thought that was pretty cool because I don't know of any other retailer out there who does such a thing.

Orientation is very boring. 3-4 hours of watching DVDs about the legacy Sam Walton left behind, workplace safety, and how unions are a big no-no...and filling out tons of forms, many of which will be for things you'll never even use.

Far as I know, part-time is anything less than 32 hours. In my experience, Wal-Mart is pretty good with not giving you more hours than you ask for.

at my store, they changed orientation. it is now 8 hours long. i don't know if that is just my store, or all stores.

I didn't hardly get an orientation...since I was hired by myself (meaning there were no masses to orientate at the time) the chick and I did what we wanted...basically I watched a bunch of lame videos from the 90's (hahaha so true!) and talked with random people. Then I did a bunch of CBLs....as many as I could. Talked with random people. Did the saftey walk around...more CBLs and then I was out on the front end by my 3rd day. For the first few days, I watch people tend the register and I bagged. Then they let me tend and they bagged...then after about 3 or 4 days of that I finally got on my own register. After a week and a half of that, I finally got put in my dept, Lawn & Garden.

They keep bitching at me to check my CBLs but I did them all in my first 2 days....apparently they don't understand that some people are proficient in computers and can actually complete CBL training (or be up to date anyways...I realize they add more as time goes on) in a timely fashion. I'm caught up, fools! Next time they mention it, I'm going to go back there and chill....

I was worried that I wasn't going to pass the drug test because I had been on Ativan for about a month a few weeks before my test...but apparently I passed because they never mentioned it.

Oh yeah I forgot to add that I'm part time too and I started out with 20 hours a week but over the past month, they've moved me up to 31 hours. I prefer less, but I'm not going to say anything because when I get my paycheck, I'll appreciate it.

I'm only available 6pm-11pm on weekdays and anytime on weekends...so they basically give me two 8 hour days on weekends (which is awesome for Sunday since they pay that $1 extra per hour) and 5 hour shifts on weekdays. It works out well.

Re: part time

I don't need the benefits. I wish they would let me tell them that so I can get as many hours as I can. We really need the money. My husband has all the benefits covered. LOL
