Hey guys! I just got hired at Walmart (well pending the drug screen but I don't do drugs so I know I will pass that). I'm just curious as to what orientation is like, training (do you get paid time and a half? I did at Meijers...), how long training is, what it's like on the 5-12am shift since that is what I'm going to be working.
And if you're part time how many hours usually would I get? I said no less than 20 and she wrote no more than 33.
Just curious as to what should I expect. And I know this might sound like a dumb question, so forgive me, but I notice everyone wears the blue shirts and khakis. I get issued those shirts right? God that sounded dumb. LOL How long do they train you on the cash register? I've never done one before but I catch on to things really fast.
TIA!!!

lol, God no. Wal-Mart will pay you as little as they possibly can. Always, lol.
Orientation will be boring. At least you'll be paid for it.
Lame videos from the 90's and computer tests.
It's mind numbing.
You can buy them from Wal-Mart. The shirts. But no you get nothing issued. Again, Wal-Mart isn't going to pay for anything more than they absolutely have to. You'll have to use your piddly ten percent off to stock up on pants and shirts of your own.

Meijers issued us the shirts and we have to turn them in when we stopped working there.
They want my orientation to be next Friday but I take my son to get his casts off that day like a 45 minute drive from my house so I can't do it that day. :( The lady seemed surprised. Figures they'd pick the one day of the week I can't do it!

I did all the CBL's in one afternoon, watched all the silly videos the next afternoon and then was sent to slave labor, I mean uhh my job back in the Deli on my third day.
Been there for three months.

You'll learn more about what you can do on the Wire during orientation. Learn the Wire and make it your best friend. It lets you do everything from ordering blue shirts/khaki pants to researching various company policies to setting up direct deposit for you paycheck and everywhere in between.

We get vests or smocks.
And.......
No drug testing unless its for a goverment position I belive.
I don't see why you should have to do a drug test just for a low-level job.
Oh, I'm a cashier too.
One year~!

You mean those hideous blue things that say "How may I help you?"
Ewww! The only good things about those are that they have pockets to store all of your miscellaneous crap in.

You had to take a drug test?
Really?
What if you said no?
September 8 2007, 02:48:44 UTC 5 years ago
I bet I wouldn't get hired if I said no. I don't do drugs so I know I'm good. LOL

I'm pretty sure its against our rights.
Which is good beucase my employer doesnt need to know
what I've been doing.
I mean, as a cashier, I just dont think it matters.
Thats sucks.

Maybe it's just me, but I would not hire someone who failed one. Even if their integrity wasn't questionable (meaning I didn't think they'd steal to support their habit), I wouldn't want to pay someone who comes into work stoned out of their mind and unable to do what they were hired for.

Orientation is very boring. 3-4 hours of watching DVDs about the legacy Sam Walton left behind, workplace safety, and how unions are a big no-no...and filling out tons of forms, many of which will be for things you'll never even use.
Far as I know, part-time is anything less than 32 hours. In my experience, Wal-Mart is pretty good with not giving you more hours than you ask for.

They keep bitching at me to check my CBLs but I did them all in my first 2 days....apparently they don't understand that some people are proficient in computers and can actually complete CBL training (or be up to date anyways...I realize they add more as time goes on) in a timely fashion. I'm caught up, fools! Next time they mention it, I'm going to go back there and chill....
I was worried that I wasn't going to pass the drug test because I had been on Ativan for about a month a few weeks before my test...but apparently I passed because they never mentioned it.

I'm only available 6pm-11pm on weekdays and anytime on weekends...so they basically give me two 8 hour days on weekends (which is awesome for Sunday since they pay that $1 extra per hour) and 5 hour shifts on weekdays. It works out well.

Re: part time
I don't need the benefits. I wish they would let me tell them that so I can get as many hours as I can. We really need the money. My husband has all the benefits covered. LOL
